It could have been better if the author had put more into the logic and plot rather than Eona’s unnecessary emotional rollercoaster. This book had the feminist in me crying out and squealing like a wittle fan girl. It was so interesting.
It is is very ceremonious, very precise and measured. Actually I thiink it was only anger. We need more stories that show trans people as people. What makes this an exceptional book is the intricate tapestry of characters and themes that are deftly woven together, as well richly textured and evocative writing.
Definitely a must-read, if you haven’t already. However, circumstance does not favour Eon; he is a cripple and despised by the trainers and other candidates for the ceremony. To say that there is much at stake is an understatement, the balance between life and death ever so thin.

This is a pretty chunky book for young adult but it was a fairly easy read.
One of the fascinating aspects of the story is watching Goodman ground the “Dragoneye” universe a bit in ours, basing the political and social system on that of fuedal Japan and China but making it come alive in its own interesting and unique ways. I saw it coming.

Eon deals with the pressure of pretending to be something he isn’t, of all the things he gave up when the choice to pretend to be a boy was made for him.
I really appreciated the exploration of gender dynamics. Her master saw great potential in her and went along with the ruse to win back power, favor and fortune for his house.

Hard to do, and parts of it genuinely interested and impressed me. They probably look something like this right now! The sword forms practiced by the Dragoneyes were very clear to me and easy to visualize. An example of this would be the crime or horror story that starts with a victim who is killed by the end of the first chapter, and then in the second chapter the sympathetic detective character appears to track down the killer.
Publishers have issued a plethora of a new series and stories intended to capture the imagination and passion of readers in a simliar way to the stories of the young boy wizard.
