I love your analysis This has been going on for a decade. But musi I looked it up on Wiki the text citing your analysis seemed a little dismissive of the piece where it says: P T Anderson’s visionary filmmaking needs no such crutches, but the use of Fratres still feels a little easy.
I mean this as no deterrent from seeing Times and Winds, which quietly stole the London Film Festival two years ago; it is an extraordinary film and its release is cause for rejoicing.

I think that the “circular” step-wise motion is an effect, not a cause. Here, it is performed by the Berlin Philharmonic cello section:. Note how the Partt sharp in the D minor scale contrasts with the C natural in the triad.

Just like the low and high voices, the middle voice traverses the circle counter-clockwise during the first half of a segment, and clockwise during the second half. The particular timbre of an instrument is part of the music, but it is not the most important element. The paet virtue of music, for me, lies outside of its mere sound. This delicate balance is maintained using the C natural from the triad and the C sharp from the melodic voices.
