The material covered includes the Wedderburn-Artin theory of semisimple rings, Jacobson’s theory of the radical, representation theory of groups and algebras, prime and semiprime rings, local and semilocal rings, perfect and semiperfect rings, etc.

User Review – Flag as inappropriate I don’t know why anyone would give this book only one star. I also need to admit it is more challenging for undergraduates than First Course, but an earnest student should not let this be a deterrent. Of course minor changes were made for the second edition; new exercises and an appendix on uniserial modules were added.
It makes a good addition to anyone’s abstract algebra library.

One of my favorite graduate courses at Berkeley is Matha one-semester course in ring theory offered to second-year level graduate students. Also, the frequent usage of the phrase “quotient The author doesn’t define his terms, which makes the book a trial to read. This is the best introduction to such rings that I know of, since most other resources are basically at graduate level.
By aiming the level of writing at the novice rather than the connoisseur and by stressing the role of examples and motivation, the author has produced a text that is suitable not only for use in a graduate course, but also for self-study in the subject by interested graduate students.
