Marx’s life, as this book shows, contained elements of both tragedy and farce. Marx, he would have us know, was an ironist. However I didn’t get a sense of Marx’s intellectual development or of his thinking from this book.

I brought Marx alive to me, and I would recommend it to anyone, who has interest in philosophy, socialism and the history of the 19th century. It is this last that I find such an affecting detail, and one that is lovingly treated by Wheen; as for the old man’s death, I found myself wiping away a tear, and I dare say I wasn’t the only reader to do that.
As it is, it is rather idiosyncratic, quite entertaining, and wholly succeeds in demystifying Marx and his times. If you read this you will learn nothing, or next to nothing, about why Karl Marx was a socialist, why he moved from philosophy to economics, or how madx developed the theories described in Capital. No trivia franci quizzes yet. Ultimately, mankind must be freed from the tyranny of all religions, Christianity included.

The style is humorist and serious at the same time, with a keen eye on the various misdeeds various politically-enclined historians twisted or wrongly presented Marx history and work, which is always nice to see. Marx may have said that philosophers have interpreted the world, but “the point is to change it”, yet Wheen remarks: Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. The emancipation of the Jews is, in the last analysis, the emancipation of mankind from Judaism.

maex The history of the 20th century is Marx’s legacy. The book bursts with funny asides, anecdotes, and sharp observations about Marx and his associates. He has not lacked biographers, but karrl the most distinguished have been more interested in the evolution of his ideas than any other aspect of his life. Never do you get a sense of the sublime force of his character, the socratic hideousness of his appearance, the maniacal obsession with petty squabbles.

When he delivered Das Kapital to his German publishing house, the manuscript had blood all over it. It’s hard to shake off the suspicion that Hitchens, who described Marx as “friend and mentor” in his memoir, supplies some of the vividness with which Wheen portrays Old Major.
Wheen, however, feels the time is ripe for delivering this thought to the world, and perhaps, in a deeply dispiriting way, he is right. He and Frederick Engels were a pair.
